The Resurrection: The Taj Mahal Hotel and Oberoi Trident

The Taj Mahal Hotel, Mumbai, will open it's door to it's guests once again, in a manner befitting only a heritage building of it's standing.
December 21st, 2008 is the day that the regal building will welcome guests warmly after the horrific Terror Attack of November 26, 2008.
The Oberoi Trident: ready for visitors....again.

Terrorist bids: time after time, year after year.

Recovering from a terrorist attack is always a painful process for a country. For those who have lost their near and dear ones, life will never be the same, and for the attacked nation, the sense of outrage and humiliation always lingers on. We have only ourselves to blame, for the severe security lapses that occur time and again. "An Intelligence Failure" is the most commonly quoted excuse or explanation we have had to listen to. Will we ever learn? Year after year, terrorists claim innocent, unarmed and unprepared lives, yet our leaders give internal security the least possible priority.
Not withstanding the terrible challenges we have before us: the internal rebels in the form of Naxals and others like the ULFA, UNLF Ultras, battling opposition political parties, fundamentalist religious groups like Bajrang Dal,  ideological parties like the Trinamool Congress and CPI (M), and every other sub-sect, tribe, or "minority" group claiming a right to carve out a niche for themselves somewhere.....things can get very very sticky indeed for the Centre to sort out. Hopefully, the day is near when each and every individual in India feels that the time is now ripe to give national security the position that it deserves to have, and stop bickering over petty issues.
Let us fight terrorrism unitedly. There is no place on earth for people who believe in taking lives to attain salvation.
Here is an interesting article that I read in the Deccan Herald, dated Saturday, December 13, 2008. I found it so inspiring, that I decided to copy it out word by word. It is a fine example of a clear headed government that has it's people's safety uppermost in it's agenda.

      QAEDA BID ON BROWN FOILED:
London, PTI: British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and other European leaders could have been target of an al-Qaeda suicide bomb plot that was foiled by Belgian police on Thursday, with the arrest of 14 people.
According to the reports, the 14 arrested included a man believed to have been planning a suicide attack as the European leaders congregated for a two day summit in Brussels.
Two out of the four Belgians who had been in Pakistan and Afghanistan since late 2007 had been under surveillance since they returned several months ago, police said. The third, the suicide attack suspect, returned only last week.
The other detainees, who included women, were suspected of providing "logisitic and material support" such as accomodation, clothing, and communication assistance.
John Delmulle, the federal prosecuter, said one suspect had "received the green light to carry out an operation from which he was not expected to come back", and " had said good bye to his loved ones, because he wanted to enter paradise with a clear conscience".
He had  recorded a farewell video and had arranged for his relatives to be taken to a  safe location, the investigators said.
" This information, linked to the fact that a European Summit is getting underway at this moment in Brussels, left us no choice but to take actio," Delmulle said.
Brown, who was in Brussels for the summit, was informed of the police raids as they took place. There were as many as 16 raids in Brussels, and one in the eastern city of Liege. It was the biggest anti-terrorism operation in Belgium's history.

The NSG Commandoes: A brief sketch.

NEWDELHI:The National Security Guard (NSG), which spearheaded the operation to flush out terrorists in Mumbai last week, was set up in1986 as a federal contingency deployment force to tackle emerging faces of terrorism in the country. With the motto “one for all,all for one”,theprimary role of this force isto combat terrorism in anyform,in areas where the statepolice and other Central police forces fail to cope withthe situation. The highly motivated force is trained to handle anti-hijack and rescue operations and to provide touchsupport to Central paramilitary forces in dealing withanti-terrorist activities.

Before the Mumbaiepisode, the NSG had suffered just two combat deathssince its formation. It was setup after the assassination ofthe then prime minister Indira Gandhi, as a rapid action force to respond to terrorist attacks, especially hijackings. Its men are drawnfrom the army and the police, and its last major operation was in 2002 when it battled Islamist terrorists whotook worshippers hostage atatemple in Gujarat.

The NSG is styled on thepattern of the SAS of the UKand the GSG-9 of Germany. It is a task-oriented forceand has two complementaryelements in the form of theSpecial Action Group (SAG)comprising Army personneland the Special RangerGroups (SRG) comprisingpersonnel drawn from theCentral paramilitary forcesor state police. All the personnel are on deputation.

Estimated to be a 5,000strong force, the “black cats”have received highly rigorous training in modernweapons and computers. They have perfected the artof jungle, desert and air warfare and also hand-to-handcombat. Imbibed with a “never-say-give-up”attitude,they could go without foodand water for weeks together. Only the toughest amongthe trainees survive and areinducted into the force. Thecore force of the NSG has received additional training inIsrael and is equipped withthe famed 9 mm Uzi sub-machine guns.

Additional tasks entrusted to the NSG now includesecurity of VVIPs, anti-sabotage checks at venues ofVVIP visits, data collectionon bomb explosions andtraining of state police personnel in anti-terrorism operations and sky marshalduties in domestic and international flights.

SAG could be off to the“place of action” on any available aircraft, includingprivate planes, at any airport without having to waitfor the IL-76MD strategictransport aircraft which areotherwise statoned “onalert” at New Delhi’s PalamAir Force Station.

The heightened pace ofterrorist operations, “a realthreat perception” to nuclear establishments andother key installations in thecountry, necessitated the operational changes in theNSG. The commanding officer of the SAG would havethe authority to seek any logistic help from the local district administration duringtheir operations. The government is also examining aproposal to give “dedicatedaircrafts”for the NSG.

Though the NSG is aforce specially equippedand trained to deal withspecific situations and to beused only in exceptionalcircumstances,it is allegedly being “misused” by thegovernment by deployingits personnel for the security of political leaders facing “high terror threats.”The home ministry is also contemplating substituting the “black cats” with a separate force exclusively forVIP security.

Heroes

Life will never be the same again for the families of three brave men who laid down their lives for the sake of the nation, while battling with highly motivated, well-armed, extremely well -trained and well- informedterrorists:
1. ATS (Anti-Terror Squad) Chief Hemant Karkare
2. Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan.
3. NSG Commando Havildar Gajendra Singh.
                                         **************************************
"Don't come up, I will handle them", Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan told his men, minutes before he was hit by bullets from the terrorists inside the Taj. " During the operation, when a Commando got injured, Unnikrishnana arranged for his evacuation and tried taking on the terrorists himself. He paid heavily with his life, says NSG Chief J.K. Dutt.
" Gajendra  Singh was chosen for the Nariman House operation as he qualified for the job extremely well. He was leading the slithering act and it's follow-up action", said the NSG Chief of Gajendra Singh.
